As Director of Asset Management, Matthew Stephenson is responsible for the execution of BKM Capital Partners’ investment strategy. Stephenson has more than 20 years of experience and is actively involved in acquisitions, leasing, asset and property management, asset valuations, financing, and disposition. Stephenson applies his widespread expertise and adds value throughout each asset’s life cycle to maximize the return on investment.
Stephenson’s broad real estate experience includes property acquisitions and dispositions, workouts and portfolio/asset management for clients like Equity Office Properties Trust, CarrAmerica Realty, Ernst & Young, Buchanan Street Partners, and most recently, Voit Real Estate Services. Stephenson has managed over 30 million square feet of industrial, commercial, and office space.
During his career with Voit Real Estate Services, Stephenson assisted in the origination of Voit Real Estate Services Asset Management division, successfully increasing assets under management for the platform from 1.5 million square feet to over 8 million square feet. He collaborated with financial institutions, owners, and investors and executed strategies to maximize the value of distressed properties across the western United States. Stephenson was successful in the disposition of more than 50 bank owned assets/projects throughout California, Arizona and Nevada between 2010 and 2012, ultimately liquidating all third-party asset portfolios. This accomplishment allowed Stephenson to build long-lasting business relationships with established lenders such as Wells Fargo Bank, Bank of America, Bank of the West, Lehman Brothers, and GE.
Prior to working with Voit Real Estate Services, Stephenson spent four years with Buchanan Street Partners. During this time, Stephenson was involved in the acquisition, asset management and/or disposition of approximately 5.5 million square feet of assets with total capitalization of more than $650 million. Stephenson’s diverse portfolios include office, medical, industrial, retail and multifamily assets. Stephenson worked with both investors and owners, creating strong real estate relationships and experience across the Sunbelt states and mid-Atlantic.
Stephenson has also acted as Receiver for the California courts on eight occasions over the last three years, acting as fiduciary and intermediary in resolving distressed real estate projects in Northern and Southern California. His role allowed him to directly dispose of certain assets while propping up value and operations awaiting foreclosure.
Stephenson graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Real Estate Finance in 1992. His professional affiliations include memberships with the Urban Land Institute (ULI), NAIOP and California Receivers Forum.
